What I Would Say To My Sixteen Year Old Self

in Hope, Joy on 01/12/14

These years are shaping you into the person you will be.

Many have agendas for you; teaches want you to be academic, coaches want you to be an all-star, friends want your approval, enemies want your demise, siblings want your time, and parents want the best for you.

It all seems complex and it is for so many reasons. But remember this is only a season in your life. Everything you are fighting for right now is strengthening you for what is going to be.

Respect is rewarding when you are not trying to prove a point. Be gracious; sometimes respecting the difference is all it takes.

Trust is like money; it is best when earned. Be wary of one who gives it freely and remember when you spend it – it is gone.

People are blessings or lessons. Either way, you are better for knowing them.

It is true what they say about giving. You cannot out bless a blessing, which is what others are. Do not take them for granted, whether it is your time, money or talent; give generously.

Work; the paycheck is just money.  Be motivated; give 110% and learn from the journey the work takes you on. There are hidden fortunes which make the payout more rewarding at the end.

Parents are not perfect and do not know all the answers. Be compassionate and forgiving; these attributes are core and will help you more than you know.

Take responsibility for yourself. Choose your words carefully, your actions wisely.

Love is not a feeling, it is a choice. In context, it is quite amazing – full of wonder and woes. It is selfless, sacrificing and simple. When it becomes more than that, choose wisely.

Family is forever. Nothing ever stays the same. One day you will miss the annoyances they bring because they will be gone.

So to my sixteen year old self, I wish you a lot; joy in the trials, peace in the pain, hope in the tomorrow and comfort in the rain. Remember who you are and remember – life is a string of choices, laughter is key.

Relish in the moments.

Learn how to breathe.

This piece is simply beautiful Jennifer!
It speaks from the heart for all of us who would love
the opportunity to go back in time and whisper
words of wisdom into our younger selves!
